| #1 | I just got a question about this year's acorn crop. It seems like a bumper crop in South-Central Minnesota, at least the areas I (and the questioner) have visited recently. What are others seeing? It's a bit early yet, but let us know what you see in your area.
Acorn production is highly variable, with huge production years occuring every 5-8 years depending on species, climate, and site conditions, and other factors. -eli

| #2 | The white oak and burr oak acorn crop seems to be good in Sherburne County, Minnesota as well.

Our acorn crop is so-so this year. The peak years were in 2002 and 2007. The acorns are small, as though stunted from lack of moisture, from our White, Red, and Bur Oaks. Our property is in Cass county where it wraps around Crow Wing county with silty Menagha sand soils. Our rainfall is about 2 inches below average for this time of year. Haven't noticed any acorns from the various hybrid oaks on our property yet, and we have several stands of them. They produce striped acorns. Had a wild hen turkey in the yard checking out the acorn crop for about 45 minutes on Labor Day. I raked up about 10 gallons of acorns in the yard today and put them in the meadow out back for the critters. |
